Major Vegetables and Root Crops Quarterly Bulletin, January - March 2018

January 2018 to March 2018

  • During the first quarter of 2018, production of peanut went up to 12.30 thousand metric tons from 12.05 thousand metric tons in 2017 or by 2.1 percent. This was brought about by the following:
    • more areas were planted in Western Visayas (Iloilo) due to utilization of rainfed palay areas and availability of seeds from the LGUs in Antique;
    • additional area planted and bigger pods harvested in SOCCSKSARGEN (Sultan Kudarat) due to sufficient soil moisture; and
    • bigger pods produced in Cagayan Valley (Cagayan) due to planting of good quality seeds.
  • Ilocos Region, the top producer, shared 7.58 thousand metric tons or 61.6 percent of the total peanut production. The other top producing regions were Western Visayas and Northern Mindanao with 8.3 percent and 6.5 percent shares, respectively.
