Major Vegetables and Rootcrops Quarterly Bulletin, July-September 2017

July 2017 to September 2017

  • The 2017 third quarter production of eggplant dropped by 4.9 percent, from 41.06 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2016 to 39.06 thousand metric tons this year. Among the factors that caused the decline were the following:
    • decreased yield in Quezon due to effect of Typhoon “Maring” in September 2017 and in Nueva Ecija due to occurrence of frequent rains during flowering. Drop in yield was also effected by the incidence of stem and fruit borer in Quezon and Nueva Ecija; and
    • shifting of some areas to tomato production in Quezon due to higher price office by traders.
  • CALABARZON topped all the eggplant producing regions with 13.08 thousand metric tons contributing 33.5 percent to the national total. Cagayan Valley came next with 11.7 percent and Western Visayas with 8.8 percent.
