Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin, January-March 2018

January 2018 to March 2018

  • Production of sugarcane (all uses) for the quarter declined from 12.58 million metric tons last year down to its current level of 11.12 million metric tons, posting a decrease of 11.6 percent.
  • Production of sugarcane for centrifugal sugar, which accounted for 98.9 percent of the total sugarcane production, was reduced by 11.4 percent as a result of the following:
    • less canes harvested brought about by the delay in harvesting in the latter part of the quarter due to the scarcity of farm laborers in Western Visayas (Negros Occidental);
    • stunted growth of canes as a result of too much rains in Northern Mindanao (Bukidnon) during the last quarter of 2017; and
    • smaller canes harvested due to less fertilizer application in Central Visayas (Negros Oriental).
  • For the quarter, Western Visayas produced 52.0 percent of the national sugarcane production, while Northern Mindanao and Central Visayas contributed 13.5 percent and 11.0 percent, respectively.
