Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin, July-September 2017

July 2017 to September 2017

Abaca

  • Production of abaca fibers for July-September 2017 went down by 2.8 percent from its production level of 18.41 thousand metric tons during the same period last year to its current level of 17.89 thousand metric tons. This was attributed to the following factors:
    • less stripping activities as newly planted suckers are not yet harvestable in Bicol Region (Catanduanes);
    • less harvest due to bunchy top infestation and mosaic disease in Eastern Visayas (Eastern Samar and Northern Samar); and
    • less stripping activities due to frequent rains in Caraga (Surigao Sur).
  • The top abaca producer for this quarter was Bicol Region with a share of 36 percent to the country’s total abaca production. Eastern Visayas followed next with 18.3 percent, and Caraga and Davao Region with 14.1 and 14 percent contribution, respectively.
