Major Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin, April-June 2017

April 2017 to June 2017

  • During the period April-June 2017, production of abaca fibers decreased by 4.5 percent, from 19.63 thousand metric tons last year down to 18.75 thousand metric tons. The decline was caused by the following:
    • less stripping activities in Bicol Region (Catanduanes) as considerable number of hills were toppled down due to Typhoon "Nina" in December 2016; and
    • less stripping activities in ARMM (Sulu) due to peace and order situation.
  • Bicol Region was the top abaca producer, contributing 36.7 percent to the country’s total abaca production, followed by Eastern Visayas with
  • 20.2 percent contribution. Production in Caraga and Davao Region comprised 11.8 percent and 10.7 percent of the national total, respectively.
