Population of Negros Island Region (Based on the 2015 Census of Population)

  • The population of Negros Island Region (NIR) as of August 1, 2015 was 4,414,131, based on the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015).

  • The 2015 population of the region is higher by 219,606 compared with the population of 4.19 million in 2010, and by 718,320 compared with the population of 3.70 million in 2000.  Refer to Table 1.
  • The population of NIR increased by 0.98 percent annually, on average, during the period 2010 to 2015. By comparison, the rate at which the region’s population grew during the period 2000 to 2010 was higher at 1.27 percent. See Table 2.

  • Of the two provinces comprising the region, Negros Occidental (excluding Bacolod City) had the bigger population in 2015 with 2.50 million. Negros Oriental posted a population of 1.35 million. Refer to Table 3.
  • Bacolod City, the only highly urbanized city in the region posted a population of 562 thousand.
  • The total population of NIR accounted for about 4.4 percent of the Philippine population in 2015.

  • The population of Negros Oriental grew faster than that of Negros Occidental (excluding Bacolod City) with an average annual population growth rate (PGR) of 0.99 percent during the period 2010 to 2015. Negros Occidental (excluding Bacolod City) posted a PGR of 0.79 percent. See Table 4.
  • Bacolod City posted a PGR of 1.79 percent.

  • The NIR is composed of one highly urbanized city, 18 component cities, 38 municipalities, and 1,219 barangays.
  • Among the cities (excluding Bacolod City) and municipalities in the region, the top ten largest in terms of population size are all cities. The City of Kabankalan, Negros Occidental topped the list with 181,977 persons. It was followed by Bago City, Negros Occidental (170,981) and Cadiz City, Negros Occidental (154,723). Refer to Table 5.

  • San Jose in Negros Oriental is the least populous city/municipality in the NIR with 20,413 persons. It was followed by Candoni in Negros Occidental (21,789) and Amlan (Ayuquitan) in Negros Oriental (23,624). See Table 6.

  • Of the 1,219 barangays in the NIR, the top ten largest in terms of population size are all located in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. Barangay Mansilingan topped the list with 45,181 persons, followed by Estefania (40,931) and Taculing (39,891). Refer to Table 7.
